Animate Arts Company have been commissioned by Cllr.Capon and Hythe Civic Society to produce a community mosaic to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Commemorating this historical event in 2012, the artworks will take inspiration from the past 1000 years in Hythe, looking specifically at key events in the town’s history, it's landmarks and the members of Royality that have influenced the town's make-up. With the help of seven community groups across Hythe, they and the lead artist on the project, Jo Dyer, will unpick some of the past and present history through art workshops. As part of the workshop, the groups will work with the artist to create portraits of the said monarchs, make drawings of places, images or symbols to that capture the town of Hythe.

With all the community's sketches, the artist will use the work and translate their ideas into one collaborative design. In the artist's studio,  the design will be made into a mosaic artwork, wrapping the surface of two benches. The final mosaic'd benches will be placed in Hythe's town square for the local community to enjoy.

Location of the benches on completion

This project will be documented through this blog site, following the processes involved and featuring all those who have been involved in the creation of this public art work. Learn more about this project (full of pictures too!)  by clicking the links along the right-hand side of this page.

Mr.Capon and Hythe Civic Society have presented medals to everyone involved, including one commemorative medal for every child in the participating schools. This project would not have been possible without the support, creativity and involvement of all the groups from Hythe and we hope that they will be proud to have played a part in this special art project for their town.
This project has been commissioned by Hythe Civic society, funded by Mr.Capon from his members grants. Shepway District Council have been working with Kent County Council and the Hythe civic society regarding the location of the art work.
