Hythe Canal in 1830
Seabrook Primary is a stone's throw from the Royal Military Canal in Hythe. In fact the school is sited near the beginning of the canal, which began to be dug in 1804. The Canal is 28 miles long and is now an important feature to the town's landscape. There is lots of useful information on this site http://www.rmcp.co.uk/canal.html
We made some brilliant drawings of the canal and how it looks in 2012. We were particularly interested in the wildlife that live on the water, and also some of the things you can do on the canal.
Swans swim along the canal.
Emperor Dragonflies can be spotted flying around on sunny days.
DID YOU KNOW.. an emperor is a type of King.
The Canal boosts lovely trees, benches, bridges and you can even hire boats to row on the canal!
The canal was the idea of Prime Minister William Pitt in 1800s. He thought it would help protect England from invading countries. William Pitt was supported by the King of England, King George III. This King was also known as Mad King George as he became very ill in his later years, acting rather mad!
We created our own portraits of King George III. Here are some of them:
